Thank you for finding us here today. There was a time when our remote hillside location meant that Brabourne village locals were joined only by Pilgrims and Travellers, who stumbled across our beautiful 16th century Country Inn seeking warmth, food and drink and a bed for the night at the foot of the North Downs as they made their way between London, Canterbury, Dover and France following the Pilgrims Way.

Nowadays of course, technology helps us welcome the contemporary Pilgrim seeking solace from the stresses of modern day life, peace and tranquillity, to enjoy fresh local food and drink good company and the wonderful landscapes and wildlife of Kent’s North Downs, perhaps to stay awhile , yet only 35 minutes by train from London, 15 minutes from the Kent Coast, Ashford and Canterbury and just a little longer by Euro star into Paris or beyond.

All of us here, a great crowd of people, have a real passion for the simple things in life, a place to meet, to enjoy the company of others, to experience the culture of Kent’s North Downs village communities, to enjoy stunning landscapes, the ever changing seasons, the fauna and flora and of course, the abundance of freshly farmed and fished local produce for which Kent is so rightly famous. Great Beer from our Hop Gardens, Wines from our Vineyards, Cider from our Orchards, all to be found and enjoyed in our beautiful Garden of England.

Though forever proud of our history, and our wonderful rural location, we aim to meet the needs of today’s modern country dweller together with that of the contemporary Pilgrim, with an attitude that is relevant to today, young at heart and both modern in culture and delivery; comfortable and convivial, relaxed and informal. Our food and drink is fresh, freshly prepared and of the highest quality. We have five very individual and unique bedrooms for those who wish to enjoy all that we stand for, good simple values, comforting like ‘an old pair of slippers’, we are the ‘best kept secret’ of many. We are the essence of a modern Country Inn; plain speaking, casual and without reservation, never ‘Gastro, Boutique or Michelin’, but always innovative and of the highest quality in everything we do, so, pop in at any time or even come and stay because we promise to do our very best to look after you!

Logs on our Fires, Wood Smoke in the air; Muddy Boots by the door, tired Dogs on the Hearth; Crusty Pastry, Fresh Bread, Wood Fired baking; local Field, Farm and Sea fresh food, just Five great rooms in which to stay, a local fresh produce Village Shop, breakfast brunch and morning coffee, tea and cakes. Open daily from 9am, a great place for folk to meet and to leave with new friends – that is the essence of The Five Bells Inn – these are our true and unyielding values.

We have just four beautiful rooms each embracing our historic architecture and true to our values, very casual and very comfortable,  Fuggle, Golding, Ortega, and Bacchus, are named after famous  hops and grapes of Kent.

Each has a unique and modern comfortable twist, and if you ask we will even light the log fires for you in Ortega and Bacchus before you arrive!  There are no televisions, we choose to
tranquility, those seeking the entertainment of others, need only go downstairs!

The Five Bells Inn, the North Downs and surrounding landscapes, are just too beautiful to walk away from late at night, so stay a while and enjoy all the very best that Kent has to offer and to which we hope we make a small but valuable contribution.  Enjoy a dawn or dusk walk on the high ridge that is the North Downs and  the Pilgrims Way.  Enjoy the wonderful views,  a panorama from Rye and beyond in the West to Folkestone and Dover in the East and across the water to France.  A chance encounter with a magnificent Stag in the mist, a herd of deer, the fox the hare, the badger and rabbit, the owl the soaring buzzard.  Enjoy the rare fauna and flora,  and all the wonderful experiences that is rural Kent’s most beautiful countryside.

We are Kent people born and bred and we love our County, its history and diversity from the rolling beauty of theDowns to the history of Canterbury, the charms of the coastal towns, the winding streets of Broadstairs and Whitstable, and the beautiful market towns and villages that are Tenterden, Biddenden,

Chilham and Wye to name just a few – all just a ‘stones throw’ from the Five Bells Inn.

Perhaps less well appreciated, but none the less magical, is the winter mstique of the North Kent Coast, Seasalter, Faversham and Oare, with its creeks and muddy inlets, or the vast vistas of Romney Marsh, and the unique eeriness though strangely friendly Dungeness, where tiny beach fishing and artist communities cower beneath the brutal skyline dominated by the power station,  these are amongst our favourite haunts on a cold damp winter’s day  – a brisk and bracing walk, an open fire, a pint or hot toddy and something nice to eat – winter days and long weekends are made for these experiences and we would be only too pleased to help you enjoy them.  Do come and stay, we will do our best to help you discover the uniqueness of Kent. Not always the prettiest, but if you know where to go, beautiful and incredibly  atmospheric!

All this to enjoy by staying with us. Room rates throughout the year for Ortega, Bacchus, Bramling Cross and Fuggle are £120  including a wonderful Brabourne breakfast and £100 for Golding , our newly converted double room suitable for all but particularly those with a small country dog!

we welcome all adults over the age of 14

We may believe we are the best, but we are by no means the only great place to eat or drink in this part of Kent – other fine hospitality can be enjoyed at we suggest the following, listed in order of distance from us here, and, on the strict understanding that you come back!
